Are You Ready to Travel?
Join Good to Go with Patti Beth as we partner with Grand Escapes Travel to cruise America on the beautiful American Queen Steamboat. This is a vacation to slow down, take a deep breath and take life as easy as the scenery slips by. We will take in the sights cruising from Memphis to St. Louis. Motorcoaching from Grove, OK to Memphis, TN, we’ll stay overnight and then join our ship the very next day.
We have several ports of call with the unique “hop on/hop off” style of shore excursions that American Queen offers. Their own motor coach follows us from port to port. Then you will have the luxury of getting on the coach as it runs a continual loop in the city from attraction to attraction. Hop off and stay as long as you please, go back to the ship for lunch, hop on and go see other places. It’s a wonderful system that allows you the chance to be on your own timeframe. Plus… the “hop on/hop off” style of shore excursions are all included!
The food is all things you will recognize, prepared by an award winning culinary team. It’s like a nice restaurant for every meal… without the need to dress up. Want something more casual? Then grab a quick meal at the buffet and eat on deck and remember: there is unlimited beverages and open bars! The staterooms are beautiful with antiques, flowers and charm everywhere. This slower pace will invite you to enjoy an ice cream while lazing in the porch swings on deck. There is plenty of entertainment onboard, from shows to music to lectures... something for everyone.
We have had nothing but compliments as we have cruised on American Queen. We invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to go with a group, and leave the driving and details to us. If you are ready to travel and would like to see more of America this year, then enjoy this great price and go with us! You’ll be greeted with a heartfelt ‘Jambo!' as you travel throughout the country, and you’ll soon return the greeting smiling just as broadly as the Kenyans you come in contact with. October 31, 2022 - Your Journey Begins
Today you’ll depart for Kenya with a connecting flight, beginning the trip of a lifetime!
November 1, 2022 - Jambo Kenya
Upon arrival in Nairobi, you will be met by your safari director and assisted with your transfer to your five star hotel, home for the next two nights. You might choose to relax by the pool briefly before settling in. Overnight: Nairobi Serena Hotel (or similar)
November 2, 2022 - Blixen’s “Out of Africa”
This morning after breakfast, your safari team hosts a pre-safari briefing at the hotel before you depart for Sheldrick Wildlife Elephant Orphanage. Learn about the most successful orphan-elephant rescue program in the world, where tiny new-born elephants that have lost their mothers are brought, raised and taught how to be ‘elephants’ again before being integrating back into the wild. This hugely successful program has saved nearly 200 baby elephants, and you’ll surely be touched by their remarkable efforts. Then you’ll visit the home of Karen Blixen of “Out of Africa” fame, hearing fascinating stories about her life as you enjoy a tour of her home. Next, you’ll visit the Kazuri Bead Factory that began as a tiny workshop with two local women hand-making beads. It soon blossomed into a ‘factory’ employing mostly single mothers who lived nearby, providing them with a steady income. You’ll watch as these women hand make each bead that’s then fired and made into stunning bracelets and necklaces. Today, Kazuri beads are sold around the world, often at prices upward of $90 per necklace. You’ll have an opportunity to buy these beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations for a fraction of the retail price. After your first day in Kenya, return to the Serena with time to relax and refresh, before departing for your special Welcome-to-Africa dinner at the famous Carnivore Restaurant! Overnight: Nairobi Serena Hotel (or similar) (B/D)
November 3, 2022 - Your Safari Begins
After breakfast you’ll depart Nairobi and your Safari begins! You’ll ride through lush tea and coffee plantations to the beautiful Aberdare Country Club where you’ll enjoy a delicious buffet luncheon. Be on the lookout for the resident peacocks, as they love to preen and grab your attention. Enjoy the views before setting out as part of a special group to The Ark. Set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, The Ark overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick that attract a host of awesome wildlife. Modeled after Noah’s Ark, The Ark has four viewing decks with balconies and lounges to provide superb game viewing from the comfort of the lodge. This is indeed a special place as the animals come to you! You’ll enjoy a delicious dinner here, then you might choose to settle in one of the decks and watch. Elephants, cape buffalo, bushbucks, warthogs all come to put on a show. If you’re lucky, a leopard or rhino might put in an appearance - you’re in the midst of the forest, so who knows what you’ll see? In fact, more than one TRIPS traveler has been known to stay up all night watching - but if you do choose to catch some sleep, there’s even a buzzer in your room to alert you to special sightings. Here’s a perfect introduction to the wildlife of Kenya! Overnight: The Ark (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 4, 2022 - Home to the Big Five
As the sun rises over the jungle-like terrain of your tree hotel, you’ll awake to the sounds of a xylophone being played along the corridors of the lodge - this is your wakeup call. Enjoy breakfast and a last look at this special place before you head out to your next destination, stopping along the way at the Girls School in Nanyuki. Return travelers will recall this heartwarming visit, as the girls put on a bit of a singing and dancing show for you. Continuing on with no more than six traveling in each safari vehicle, you’ll enjoy the changing scenery as you cross the equator traveling from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere bound for the remarkable Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp. This sheltered oasis, with luxury tents clustered around a waterhole and salt lick, enjoys spectacular views of the lush and golden plains beneath the snowcapped peaks of Mount Kenya. After checking in and enjoying lunch, set out on an afternoon game drive. Home to the ‘Big Five’, the private conservancy is a habitat to nearly 100 black rhino, several hundred bird species, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, jackal and more. Back at camp, enjoy a charming blend of under-canvas ambiance and safari luxury. Dine tonight in the Rhino Restaurant, housed in the former manager’s home of this once-colonial farm located in central Kenya. Overnight: Sweetwaters Camp (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 5, 2022 - Samburu Game Drive
Depart the camp after breakfast bound for the northern region of Kenya and the Samburu/Shaba/Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Other safari programs often overlook this wonderfilled region, but Samburu is amonge East Africa’s most fascinating game parks. You’ll arrive at the Sarova Shaba Lodge in time for lunch. Set amidst the trees along the Ewaso Nyiro River, you’ll be sleeping the next two nights in the heart of the Shaba Game Reserve - the “Born Free Country” that Joy Adamson called home for many years. After lunch, you’ll have some free time to relax by the refreshing pool or wander around the grounds of the lodge before setting out later this afternoon for your next game drive.
The waters of the Ewaso Nyiro river draw wildlife in great numbers, and Samburu is visited by large herds of elephants, drawn by the promise of water. You’ll see species that are unique to the Samburu area such as the reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, Grevy’s zebra and the graceful long-necked gerenuk. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a leopard relaxing in a tree in the late afternoon sun. This most elusive of cats is just one of the rare and beautiful creatures you’ll spot in Samburu. After an exciting game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and enjoy the evening recounting your amazing day! Overnight: Sarova Shaba Lodge (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 6, 2022 - Samburu Game Drives
Today you’ll set out on morning and afternoon game drives giving you the opportunity to see more of Samburu’s typically northern species, such as the Somali ostrich and the vulturine guinea fowl. The forests along the riverbanks are home to over 300 species of birds, and lions are also frequently seen here. You’ll find that the vivid colors and sharp contrasts between bush, sky and sand make Samburu a photographer’s favorite. Between game drives, you will have the unique opportunity to visit a Samburu village. After being welcomed with song and dance, you’ll hear about the everyday lives and culture of these proud nomadic people. You’ll be allowed to enter a Samburu hut built by the women of the tribe, and learn how they survive in this desert-like land. Be ready with your cameras as Samburu Warriors dance to rhythmic chanting highlighted by a series of spectacular vertical leaps. Both men and women are adorned with colorful dress and elaborate beaded necklaces and head gear that are distinctive to their tribe. This village experience is truly not to be missed! Overnight: Sarova Shaba Lodge (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 7, 2022 - Marvelous Maasai Mara
After breakfast, travel to the local airstrip for your flight over the Great Rift Valley and onto the unspoiled savannah of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. You’ll arrive at the private airstrip of the Mara Safari Club, your luxury tented camp for the next two nights. Enjoy lunch by the river before relaxing on the deck of your tented cabin this afternoon. Then you’ll set out for an afternoon game drive. Widely considered to be Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve, the vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle and topi, as elephants and buffalo wallow in the swamp areas. The Mara has been called the “Kingdom of Lions,” and these regal and powerful hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetah are also a common sight in this awesome natural wonder, a place where Maasai warriors share the plains with these mighty cats. Keep your binoculars and cameras ready, as the Mara has the richest concentration of wildlife in Kenya! Overnight: Mara Safari Club (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 8, 2022 - More Maasai Mara
Today, you’ll get a closer look at the Mara with two extensive game drives. On plains dotted with acacia trees, you’ll see enormous herds of grazing animals and spot lion, hyena and cheetah hidden amongst the brush. As you drive off-road in the tall grass, you’ll spot giraffes, elephants and zebras grazing. Back at the lodge, delight in watching the hippos that live directly beneath the cliff where your luxury tent sits. Your luxury tented lodging comes complete with a wooden deck, canopied beds, a full bathroom and all of the romance and unique atmosphere of the classic safari of years gone by. The Mara is also the perfect spot for you to experience your own balloon safari! This optional excursion lifts off at dawn, lifting you up to marvel at the mist rising over the land and your thrilling bird’s eye view of the spectacular scenery. As your balloon drifts slowly and silently above the plains, the rivers fan out in every direction with giant herds of wildlife grazing silently beneath you. When you reluctantly return to earth, celebrate with a champagne breakfast right there on the veldt, a glamorous and most fitting conclusion to your romantic flight! Overnight: Mara Safari Club (or similar) (B/L/D)
November 9, 2022 - Onward to Nairobi
After breakfast and a last fond look at the Mara, you fly back to Nairobi and check into your day room at the Boma Nairobi Hotel. The afternoon is free for relaxing at the hotel before your safari team assists you with your transfer to the airport for your evening flight home. Asante Rafike ~ Thank you, friend! (B)
